Abstract

One of the issues that was subjected to study in Azerbaijani philological thought in the first half of the 20th century was European literature, especially European novels. New researches and articles were published about these novels that were being translated into our language.

M.Rafili, A.Sultanli, P.Khalilov are the authors of valuable researches in our literature on “Don Quixote”, which is considered to be the first European novel. In these studies, the life and work of Miguel de Cervantes were studied chronologically, and his position in Spanish and world literature was correctly assessed.
The genre of novel became the leading genre in Europe as of the 19th century, and its various types have emerged. One of the most outstanding masters of the novel of this period is the great French writer Victor Hugo, who had a controversial and rich literary career. The novel "Notre-Dame de Paris" and "Les Miserable" have always been in the center of attention of our literary scholars. M.Rafili described the novel "Notre-Dame de Paris" as a saga glorifying the wisdom of the French people. The most powerful scholars working on the Western literature of the time achieved the right conclusion in their analysis of the novel “Les Miserable”; indeed, the novel did not describe a specific event, but the life of a people living in poverty, with all the contradictions of France in the first half of the 19th century.
Jules Verne is the most translated European writer in Azerbaijani literature. From the theme of heroism to the science fiction novel, this genre, which is a world of colorful images with different themes in European literature, entered the Azerbaijani literary process with the work of Jules Verne.
