Abstract

In the article, it is reported about the acquaintance of the Azerbaijani reader with “The
Divine Comedy” by the famous Italian poet of the 12th century Alighieri Dante, about the translation
and publication of the work into the Azerbaijani language. In our country, the poem was first
translated in parts in the 50s of the 20th century and was studied only with the help of university
textbooks; studies have also been written on “The Divine Comedy”. The outstanding poet Aliaga Kurchayli, who successfully translated the works of many writers into our language, intermittently translated Dante's “The Divine Comedy” into Azerbaijani and presented it to the public in full in 1973. Since the poet translated the work from the Russian language, we also touched upon the problem of Dante's research and translation in Russian translation studies. The article discusses the tercet – the form of poetry used in “The Divine Comedy”, the peculiarities of its processing when translated into our language; it is reported that there are similar examples in the centuries-old Turkic poetry.

The article also discusses the sacred meaning of the sacred number 3 found in Christian religious views contained in the poem, which is divided into sections of Hell, Purgatory and Paradise. Although Christian thinking is presented in the poem, it is possible that the scenes of hell and heaven were fueled by the research of Muslim scholars. Since the life of philosopher-thinker, hundreds of Dante’s researchers have conducted scientificreligious, philosophical, artistic-aesthetic and psychological studies of “The Divine Comedy”, but
they have not been completed. Presentation to the Azerbaijani reader of such works, which are the product of intersection of cultures and their mutual influence, can contribute to the study of the world literary samples at a more professional level.
