The work of Khatib Tabrizi “Sharh Maksura Ibn Dureid” as a literary and historical source

Abstract

The article deals with the commentary on the poem “Maksura” (around 920) by the famous Arab poet and philologist Ibn Dureid (838-933), written by the Azerbaijani scientist, commentator of poetic works, Khatib Tabrizi (1030-1109) entitled “Sharh Maksura Ibn Dureid” (1105). It contains references to history, in particular, episodes the life of the famous poet Imrual-Gais, his father Hujr, the ruler of the Arabian tribe of Kinda, descriptions of the intrigues and wars that unfolded around this tribe, caused by the confrontation between the strong neighbors of Byzantium and Sasanian Iran and other statements of Khatib Tabrizi concerning history are also investigated. Consideration of these facts is carried out in the context of the works of Russian researchers who, with their articles, confirmed the value of Khatib Tabrizi’s commentary in studying the details of the historical past of medieval Arabia.
